Museum Bank Indonesia
Best time to visit
Go on a weekday morning around the 9 AM opening, when the marble halls are nearly empty and natural light pours through the tall windows; weekends pull big family crowds and longer queues outside.
Budget tips
Entry is free, you only register with ID at the front desk, and guided tour donations are optional. Skip the indoor cafe and buy lunch from the street stalls in the square out front to keep the whole visit cheap.

About
Quick facts: More than 1,000 artifacts fill this former Dutch colonial bank, spanning ancient gold coins from the archipelago to modern banknotes. Walls up to 2.5 meters thick and a monstrous steel vault door once guarded the cash, while the original brass teller stations still line the hall.
Highlights: Out front, the art deco facade wears a jagged zigzag roofline, a playful crown that most visitors photograph right past. Down in the basement, the original vault door gapes open, daring you to step inside the cold steel chamber where gold reserves once sat stacked.
Insider tips
- Bring your passport or national ID because registration at the front desk is required.
- Arrive right at the 9 AM opening, the doors close in the early afternoon and the morning light makes the marble hall glow.
- Rent a colonial-era outfit at the staircase and shoot portraits against the old brass teller counters.
- Most of the story lives on the numbered displays, so skip the audio guide if you want a faster stroll.
