About

Quick facts: This fortress stands on a 20-meter-high cliff rising above a wadi valley. Its walls are up to 3 meters thick, and inside it hides underground tunnels that led to secret water sources.

Highlights: Looking from the tower, you see the only place in Oman where the desert meets the ocean, a sight for which photographers would give half their equipment. On the fortress walls, ancient inscriptions left by Portuguese sailors 400 years ago are still visible.

Insider tips

  • Don't miss the chance to climb to the very top tower: it offers the best view over the entire bay and the city.
  • Come on weekdays, when there are almost no visitors, while on weekends local families have picnics here.
  • Try to find the old Portuguese carved marks on the southern wall: it is a detail known to very few.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the steps are stone and quite steep, and handrails are not everywhere.
