Quick facts: The Roman mosaics, covering thousands of square meters, were only discovered in 1959 in the center of present-day Constanța. The park offers a rare opportunity to walk directly over more than 3,000 years of history, where layers of Roman, Greek, and Byzantine civilizations are visible exactly where they once stood.
Highlights: The most breathtaking sight is the giant mosaic floor that once belonged to a wealthy Roman trade city called Tomis. Walking along the glass walkway, you see every mosaic tile beneath you, preserved for nearly 2,000 years thanks to being buried under the future city.
Insider tips
- Bring sunscreen and a hat, because the mosaics are entirely in an open-air area and there is little shade.
- The best photo is taken from the glass walkway, where the mosaics reflect in the camera lens with extraordinary clarity.
- Be sure to also see the ruins of the Roman lighthouse next to the park; they often go unnoticed by visitors.
- If you come in the morning before 10 o'clock, the park is almost empty and you can enjoy the mosaics in peace.
