Over 3,000 bronze and stone lanterns dot the courtyards and pathways, many engraved with donors' names and still lit for seasonal ceremonies.

Worshippers hang small deer-shaped ema plaques carved from cedar, their flaking paint and hand-written wishes adding a tactile, human layer to the flickering lantern light.
