Quincy Market
Weekday late mornings around 10:30am are calmest before the lunch flood swallows the counters. Rainy afternoons are a sleeper pick, since the covered colonnades stay dry and the queues shrink.
Walking in costs nothing: the hall and plaza are free to roam, with food running $5 to $14 per order. Split a seafood bread bowl between two, skip the souvenir carts near the doors, and check the bakery stalls near closing for marked-down pastries.

Roughly 18 million visitors a year crisscross the granite cobbles outside, while the main food hall runs a full 535 feet from one colonnade to the other. Mayor Josiah Quincy pushed the project through the city council in the 1820s, and locals repaid him by naming the whole structure after him.
Climb to the glassed-in balcony at the west end and peer down into the rotunda, where a single round skylight throws a clean pool of daylight onto the granite floor below. A 1960s plan to swap the empty hall for a parking garage stalled under a preservationist lawsuit, and the long fight ended with the colonnades reopening to a packed crowd in 1976.
- Show up before 11am on a weekday and the famous chowder counter is a five-minute wait instead of a half hour.
- Skip the crowded front plaza entirely and photograph the full granite colonnade from the raised walkway at the east end.
- Wear flat, grippy shoes because the smooth granite pavers turn slick after rain.
- Follow the locals into the smaller side stalls along the outer colonnades instead of the pricey lobster-roll stands near the main doors.
