Om

Hurtige fakta: Over 600 years old, this former Augustinian monastery garden has outlived empires, plagues, and two world wars to remain one of Europe's oldest botanical gardens. Its greenhouse collection includes a 150-year-old palm tree that has grown so tall it had to punch through the roof, now towering two stories above the glass.

Højdepunkter: Behind a nondescript stone wall hides a 130-year-old wrought-iron greenhouse with a giant wisteria that wraps around the frame like a purple serpent each April. Most visitors walk right past the entrance, leaving the winding gravel paths and shaded benches almost empty even on sunny weekends.

Insidertips

  • Enter through the side gate on Schubertstraße instead of the main entrance to skip the small queue on busy days.
  • The alpine garden section is often overlooked but has over 500 species of mountain plants from the Alps.
  • Bring a small notebook for plant labeling sketches, the signage uses Latin botanical names perfect for learning.
  • Visit just before closing time at 6 PM to catch the warm golden light filtering through the tropical greenhouse glass.
