Visit early in the morning right when gates open at 8:30 AM to avoid the crowds and summer heat. Late autumn offers the most stunning scenery, when the surrounding maple trees turn brilliant red.

Budgettips

General admission is 20 RMB (about $3 USD) for the mausoleum. A combo ticket covering all attractions within the Purple Mountain scenic area costs 100 RMB and saves you money if you plan to visit the nearby Linggu Temple and Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum too.

Om

Hurtige fakta: More than 3 million visitors climb the 392 steps to the mausoleum each year. The entire complex was designed in a massive bell shape, representing the call to awaken the Chinese people.

Højdepunkter: The white marble statue of the man sits inside a hall where the ceiling features a stunning 12-pointed Kuomintang blue sky symbol, perfectly aligned with the floor pattern below. From the top platform, look back through the archway and notice how the entire staircase disappears from view, creating the illusion that you're walking directly into the mountainside.

Insidertips

  • Walk to the very top platform and turn around: the 392 steps become invisible from above, a clever optical illusion by the architect Lu Yanzhi.
  • Skip the crowded main entrance and enter through the east gate for a quieter approach through the forest.
  • Bring water and pace yourself on the steps, there are no shops once you pass the main gate.
  • Visit on a weekday in November to see the golden ginkgo and crimson maple trees lining the path with almost no tourists around.
