Bedste tid at besøge
Visit mid-morning on weekdays when tour groups haven't arrived and the light hits the ruins for better photos. December brings festive outdoor altar displays for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Budgettips
The ruins are free to walk through, though donations are appreciated. Pair it with the nearby La Merced church, also free, for a full colonial church-walking loop without spending a quetzal.

Om
Hurtige fakta: This cathedral rose from the rubble after two massive earthquakes in 1773 destroyed its original baroque facade and inner sanctuary. What remains today is a partly restored structure where roofless ruins sit beside an active parish church, letting visitors walk among crumbling arches and centuries-old stonework.
Højdepunkter: The decaying facade still holds its original carved stonework, with earthquake-shattered columns standing where the main altar once presided. A closer look reveals colonial-era fresco fragments still clinging to sections of wall, their faded pigments a ghost of the ornamentation that once covered every surface.
Insidertips
- Bring sturdy shoes because the surviving floor stones are uneven and loose in the roofless sections
- Climb to the upper balcony area for a rare elevated view over the roofless nave
- Arrive right at 9 AM when mass ends and the church empties out for quieter exploration
- Skip flash photography indoors to keep the surviving fresco pigments from fading further
