Bedste tid at besøge

Arrive at dawn around high tide for the clearest photos and fewer people, or stay for sunset when the torii turns into a striking silhouette.

Budgettips

Shrine entry is a small fee, about 300 JPY for adults with lower rates for children, and there are no free days; JR Pass covers the JR ferry from Miyajimaguchi so use it to avoid paying the private ferry. Consider a Hiroshima tram/day pass if combining with city sights, and carry cash for small vendors.

Om

Hurtige fakta: Morning fog softens the vermilion glow as a tunnel of thousands of torii gates leads you along winding steps, while dozens of stone foxes stare from mossy niches. Generous donations from businesses and families have left over 10,000 inscribed gates, turning the climb into a patchwork of names, prayers, and surprisingly personal messages.

Højdepunkter: Slip through a narrow, tunnel-like corridor of over 5,000 vermilion torii gates, their lacquered wood glowing in the sun while the air smells faintly of incense and old cedar, and notice that each gate has a donor's name and year etched into it along the roughly 4-kilometer trail. Between the gates you'll find hundreds of stone fox statues wearing red bibs, some clutching tiny keys in their mouths, and locals quietly leave rice and sake at the smallest altars as a tradition believed to keep the mountain's good fortune flowing.

Insidertips

  • Check tide times and aim for high tide if you want the torii to appear to float, low tide allows a close walk-out for different shots.
  • Arrive before 08:30 to avoid large tour groups, or visit after 17:00 in summer when crowds thin.
  • Wear comfortable, slip-resistant shoes for wooden boardwalks and steep trails if you plan to hike Mount Misen.
  • Head to the beach near Momijidani Park for the classic torii silhouette photo, and do not feed or chase the deer.
