Hundreds of thousands can gather for major events, and archaeological remains under the square are displayed in a nearby museum so you can sense layers of the city's past.

At dusk a nightly military flag-lowering halts traffic and conversation, people fall silent as a lone bugle sounds and the air fills with the metallic tang of gunpowder and the flurry of hundreds of pigeons taking off from colonial rooftops.
