Hurtige fakta: Omkring 100.000 planter fra fem kontinenter fylder de 70.000 kvadratmeter terrasseret bjergskråning, mange importeret over fem årtier begyndende i 1980'erne. Havens grundlægger, José Berardo, samlede også en af Portugals største samlinger af samtidskunst, udstillet i hovedpaladset.

- Wear grippy shoes: the path drops steeply from the entrance down to the lakes and back up is a serious climb.
- Photograph the azulejo panels closest to the palace at midday, when direct sun makes the blue tiles pop.
- Skip the indoor art collection if your time is tight and save your energy for the outdoor terraces and viewpoints.
- Take the cable car up to Monte and walk downhill into the garden entrance to avoid the steepest ascent.
