Looking for things to do in Hargeisa, Somalia? Start at the Hargeisa War Memorial, where a MiG fighter jet display commemorates the civil war. From there, head to the Hargeisa Central Market, a sprawling marketplace full of spices and textiles. Nearby lies the Laas Geel rock shelter with 3,500-year-old cattle paintings.

The only place in the world where a real fighter jet hangs over the city as a war memorial. You stand under the wings of a MiG-17 and feel the weight of history that took place here.

A place where you can look into the faces of artists from 7,000 years ago. Under a rock overhang, a gallery of thirty meters of painted cows and shepherds in vibrant ochre and white tones awaits you.

Hurtige fakta: Under these granite overhangs in the Somaliland mountain range lies one of the best preserved collections of cave paintings in all of Africa. Ancient artists immortalized cows in ceremonial robes, people with outstretched arms, and mysterious domesticated animals with unusual neck shapes here 5,000 to 9,000 years ago.

Højdepunkter: The paintings show cows adorned with a kind of ritual cloak, a motif not found elsewhere in northern Africa. Archaeologists discovered this site only in 2002, when local herders alerted a French research team to "rocks that tell stories."

Stop in the heart of Hargeisa and let yourself be awed by the majestic white silhouette that rises to the sky. You will see the living center of faith, where thousands of worshippers gather daily under giant domes.

A place where, they say, earth meets sky and wishes come true. The climb to the top rewards visitors with a panoramic view of the endless savannah.

The only place in Somalia where you can see lions live. You walk between the enclosures and hear a roar that echoes all the way to the hills behind Hargeisa.

Hurtige fakta: It stretches over an area of 45 hectares and is home to more than 200 species of birds, including the rare saker falcon. In the middle of the park lies an artificial lake, which was created in the 1980s and serves as the main birdwatching spot.

Højdepunkter: In the evening, you can experience the incredible flight of millions of birds returning to roost for the night on a small island in the middle of the lake. The sun sets behind the acacias and the air fills with chirping and the rustle of wings, creating an almost magical atmosphere.

Hurtige fakta: In the display cases of this museum you will find one of the largest collections of nomadic objects in the entire African region. Among the exhibits is a remarkable collection of traditional Somali miniature houses that once served as toys for children of nomadic tribes.

Højdepunkter: The museum hides an original hand-embroidered nomadic tribe tent with a diameter of over four meters, which took three women two full years to make. Its patterns tell a story of a clan's migration across seven different oases, and each stitch has its own meaning.

Weather was decent in December but the dust gets everywhere. Pack a scarf for your face if you're not used to it.

Mixed feelings. Some parts are beautiful and raw but the lack of infrastructure gets tiring. Not for first time travelers.

Came for 3 days, stayed a full week. The energy here is something else. Markets are chaotic but the roasted goat is unforgettable.

Friday mornings are dead quiet for shopping. Everything closes for prayers. Plan your market visits for Saturday instead.

Exchange money at the main market stalls not the hotels. You get 10-15% more. Also carry small bills for taxis and tea stalls.
