Højdepunkter: Den Mørke Kirke fik sit navn, fordi den næsten ikke har nogen vinduer, og den evige dysterhed er netop grunden til, at dens bibelske fresker fra det 11. århundrede overlevede i så uberørt stand. En enkelt lysstråle rammer kuppelmaleriet af Kristus Pantokrator i den helt rigtige vinkel, så de gyldne glorier synes at lyse op mod den dybe blå baggrund.

- Pay the separate entry fee for the Dark Church, its frescoes are dramatically more vivid than any other chapel here.
- Visit the Apple Church and Snake Church early in your walk before crowds cluster in the narrow corridors between chapels.
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, the carved stone pathways and steep stair climbs between chapels can be slippery.
- Photography inside the chapels is often restricted, but you can capture excellent exterior shots of the rock-cut facades from the upper pathway.
