Its reading rooms see about 1.7 million visitors annually, yet few realize that any adult with a valid ID can walk in and read for free.
Højdepunkter: Tucked inside the Thomas Jefferson Building is a tiny, climate-controlled vault holding Thomas Jefferson's personal library of 6,487 books, which he sold to Congress in 1815 to restart the collection after the British burned the original. The books are arranged in Jefferson's own three-category system of Memory, Reason, and Imagination, a quirky organizational method you can still see today.
