Hurtige fakta: Fæstningen rejser sig 20 meter med mure af stampet jord og dækker cirka 4 hektar i det centrale Bukhara. Efter russiske styrker bombarderede fæstningen i 1920, overlevede kun omkring 20 procent af de oprindelige bygninger.
Højdepunkter: Registan-pladsen direkte foran fæstningen var engang skueplads for offentlige henrettelser hver fredag, hvor dømte fanger blev kastet fra den forhøjede portrampe. En lidet kendt kendsgerning: den sidste emir undslap gennem en hemmelig underjordisk tunnel, da Den Røde Hær brød gennem murene i 1920 og efterlod sit harem og sin skatkammer.

- Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes because the packed earth paths and uneven staircases inside the fortress are dusty and slippery.
- Visit the small throne room on the right after entering the main gate, it has the most intact original ceiling paintings from the 19th century.
