Nopeat faktat: Noin 15 kivirakennelmaa on levittäytynyt kiviselle kukkulalle, atacameñokansan keskiajalla rakentama puolustuslinnoitus. Verinen taistelu vuonna 1540 sai puolustajat hylkäämään kukkulan, ja muurin jäänteet seisovat vielä tänäkin päivänä.
Kohokohdat: Yksi ainoa kapea aukko muurissa toimi porttina, puolustus niin tehokas, että muutama pystyi pitämään kokonaisen armeijan ulkona. Harjanteen huipulla, runsaat 100 korkeusmetriä joen yläpuolella, saat koko laakson ja 5 916 metriä korkean Licancabur-tulivuoren samaan katseeseen.

- Bring at least one liter of water and sturdy shoes, the last stretch is steep and rocky.
- Come for sunset for golden light over the valley, but allow time to get back down before darkness falls.
- Take the opportunity to photograph the volcano from the upper terraces, where you get the whole mountain range in the frame.
- Skip the guided tours if you are an experienced hiker, the trail is easy to find on your own.
