Nopeat faktat: Perched dramatically on a rocky islet in the middle of the Meteora valley, this 16th-century monastery was built using ropes, pulleys, and sheer determination. Its name translates to "the monastery of the saint who never sleeps," referencing the continuous prayers once held by its monks.

Kohokohdat: Unlike the more crowded monasteries, Varlaam still has a working monk community that tends to the grounds with quiet devotion, and you can sometimes smell fresh bread baking from their kitchen. Climb the original net-hoist tower and peer down the sheer cliff face: for centuries, monks and supplies were the only things hauled up those 400 feet on a single rope.

• Cover your shoulders and knees: monks enforce the dress code strictly at the entrance.
• The 15th-century frescoes in the main church are among the best preserved in all of Meteora, so bring a small flashlight to see them clearly.
• Arrive by 8:30 AM to have the courtyard almost to yourself before the tour buses roll in around 10 AM.
• Skip the monastery shop and buy honey or olive oil from the monks directly if they're selling it near the entrance.
