Tietoa
Nopeat faktat: Stretching across 31 square kilometers, this is one of Asia's largest artificial lakes, providing 40% of Bhopal's drinking water. King Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty created it in the 11th century by damming two tributaries of the Betwa River, with the massive earthen embankment still intact today.
Kohokohdat: At sunset, the lake transforms into a mirror reflecting the sky's oranges and purples while hundreds of migratory birds from Siberia and Central Asia arrive for their winter stay. A narrow stone causeway called Pul Pukhta, built in the 1600s, splits the lake in two, and locals still walk across it barefoot as a tradition during the annual Bhojpur fair.
Sisäpiirin vinkit
- Bring binoculars to spot flamingos and storks near the Takia Island bird sanctuary during winter months.
- Skip the crowded boat jetty near the main road and walk to the Kamla Park side for quieter views and better photo angles.
- Visit on a full moon night when the lake glows silver and local families gather for evening strolls along the 6-kilometer promenade.
- Wear closed shoes if you plan to explore the Pul Pukhta causeway, as the stones can get slippery from moss.
