Paras aika vierailla

Visit in the late afternoon between 3:00-4:00 PM when sunlight streams through the stained glass windows and creates a colorful light effect on the marble floor. Sunday morning is also special because the bells are still rung for mass at 7:00 AM.

Budjettivinkit

There is no official entrance fee, but a voluntary donation of around 500 JMD (Rp 5,000) for church maintenance is greatly appreciated. Bring small cash because there are no card machines near the church.

Tietoa

Nopeat faktat: Built in the 19th century, this church is one of the oldest limestone churches in Jamaica. Its 28-meter-tall bell tower rises above the city, while the interior features original wooden ceilings and mahogany pews that are more than 150 years old.

Kohokohdat: Behind the heavy wrought iron door lies a rare stained glass window made in England in the 1880s depicting biblical scenes with cobalt blue and ruby red that glow when the afternoon sun shines through it. The black and white checkered marble floor is still original since it was first installed, every scratch on its surface holding the traces of thousands of footsteps of the congregation over six generations.

Sisäpiirin vinkit

  • The best photos can be taken from the church side courtyard, not from the front, because the bell tower looks perfect against the blue Caribbean sky.
  • Sit on the third row bench from the front to get the best viewpoint of the stained glass windows without obstruction from wooden pillars.
  • Visit on a regular weekday for a calmer experience because weekends often have wedding or baptism ceremonies.
  • Ask the church caretaker for permission to see the bell room on the upper floor; the view of the Black River city rooftops from the top of the church is quite interesting.
