Nopeat faktat: Thomas Mann won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929, and this summer house was where he spent three consecutive summers from 1930 to 1932 writing parts of his epic Joseph and His Brothers tetralogy. The museum sits on the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the Baltic Sea on one side and a freshwater lagoon on the other.

Kohokohdat: The writing desk on the second floor faces directly out over the Curonian Lagoon, exactly as Mann arranged it so he could gaze across the water while composing his biblical epic. You can stand in the same spot where the Nobel laureate watched sunsets and found the rhythm for some of 20th century literature's most ambitious pages.

• Arrive by bicycle: the museum has a bike rack, and cycling the Curonian Spit's forest trails is the best way to reach Nida from the ferry terminal.
• Ask the staff to unlock the upstairs balcony, which has a view Mann himself used daily and is often closed to casual visitors.
• Pair your visit with a walk up the nearby Parnidis Dune, a 52-meter sand dune that offers a panoramic view of both the lagoon and the Baltic Sea.
• Bring cash, as the small museum shop and cafe don't always accept cards for books and postcards.
