Nopeat faktat: This barrier island sheltering the Ria Formosa lagoon is home to 1,000 year-round residents who grew up without cars, just sandy footpaths. No high-rises or resorts exist here, giving way to wooden walkways and brightly painted fishermen's cottages.

Kohokohdat: Locals still play a traditional card game called Sueca at the island's sole cafe well into the evening, and you can hear the laughter and slapping of cards from the sand.
