Tietoa
Nopeat faktat: With walls up to 30 meters thick in places, this fortress could withstand months-long sieges and housed a garrison of 2,000 soldiers. Its concentric defensive design, with two layers of walls forming a killing zone between them, made it nearly impossible for medieval armies to capture.
Kohokohdat: Inside the castle walls, a 120-meter-long underground gallery runs beneath the southern ramparts, carved directly into the bedrock to supply water during sieges. Look for the Gothic-style chapel converted from a Muslim mosque, where Crusader knights once prayed alongside Byzantine columns scavenged from ancient Roman sites.
Sisäpiirin vinkit
- Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes: the stone steps are uneven and worn smooth by centuries of footsteps.
- Bring a flashlight to explore the dark underground reservoir chambers and tunnels beyond the main tourist path.
- Skip the midday heat by resting in the Great Hall's shaded interior, where thick stone walls keep temperatures surprisingly cool.
- Climb to the top of the Tower of the Daughter of the King for the best panoramic view of the valley below.
