Late afternoon on a weekday from June to September, when the sun hits the Zugspitze face and the water glows emerald green. Arrive before 10 AM on summer weekends to beat the crowds.

- Pack a swimsuit even in cooler weather, the water is bracingly cold but the swimming coves on the eastern shore are sublime.
- Head to the northern shore for the most dramatic reflections of the Zugspitze in the water, especially during golden hour.
