Γρήγορα στοιχεία: Perched 430 meters up Monte Pellegrino, this sanctuary was carved directly into the mountainside cliff face. The site marks the cave where Santa Rosalia, Palermo's patron saint, spent her final years as a hermit in the 12th century.
Αξιοσημείωτα: Three million pilgrims climb the 132 steps to this cave sanctuary every year during the July festino, many walking barefoot as a sign of devotion. Inside the candlelit grotto, Rosalia's marble statue lies beneath a shower of gold ex-votos, jewelry and silver hearts left by locals whose prayers were answered.

- Wear comfortable shoes as you'll climb 132 stone steps on the approach and the path up Monte Pellegrino involves a steep 40-minute walk from the bus stop.
- Photograph the sanctuary at sunset from the outdoor terrace for unobstructed views of the city, the port and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
- Skip the cafeteria at the base and bring your own water and snacks for the hike up the mountain.
- Arrive right when it opens at 7am on weekdays to experience the grotto in near-silence before the tour groups arrive.
