Over 800 rock-cut tombs and carved facades scatter across the cliffs, evidence of a bustling trade crossroads that connected Arabia, Egypt and the Levant.

- Wear sturdy closed shoes and sun protection; trails are rocky and shade is scarce.
- Arrive at or just after opening to see the Treasury in soft light and avoid large tour groups.
- Climb the steps to the Monastery and High Place of Sacrifice for panoramic views, allow extra time and carry plenty of water.
- Carry Jordanian dinars for vendors, agree prices for horses or guides in advance, and skip the short carriage ride through the Siq if you can walk.
