Gyors tények: Floating on a foundation of thousands of oak piles driven into the lake bed, the castle has never sunk or shifted since 1554. Its rooftop is adorned with eight towering copper spires that once served as lookout posts during times of conflict.
Főbb látnivalók: Above the main entrance hangs a small carved figure of the castle builder, Frans Brockenhaus, lounging with a glass of wine and a smirk: a self-portrait that mocks his own creation. The castle was saved from ruin in 1882 when a wealthy count purchased it on a whim at auction for the equivalent of a modern luxury car, then spent decades restoring it by hand.
Bennfentes tippek
- Head straight to the top floor of the tower first for panoramic views of the lake and gardens before others arrive.
- The maze garden is tougher than it looks: allow at least 20 minutes to find the center and back out.
- Wear sturdy shoes with grip, spiral staircases and uneven cobblestones inside the castle are slippery when damp.
- Skip the lunch buffet inside the castle restaurant and walk 5 minutes to the on-site bakery for cheaper open-faced sandwiches.
