Gyors tények: A név szuahéliül annyit tesz: „a rabszolga háza”, igen különös becenév a XIV. századi tengerészek és kereskedők faluja számára. Korallházak és mecsetek romjai terülnek el öreg baobabfák alatt, egy öböllel szemben, ahol naponta kétszer jön és megy az árapály.
Főbb látnivalók: A nagy mecset belsejében a korallból faragott imafülke hét évszázadnyi tengeri szél után is szinte érintetlen maradt. A baobab gyökerei mint hatalmas ujjak ölelik körül a falakat, és a halászok még ma is azt mondják, hogy a síroszlop a pirogák tájékozódási pontjaként szolgált.

- Ask to see the kanga weaving demonstration, a spectacle of hands worth your time.
- Attend the 11 a.m. show in front of the reconstructed village: the shaded benches fill up fast.
