Go in shoulder season, spring or fall. Summer gets humid in the south, winters can be brutal inland but ski resorts are excellent.
Tipping culture took some getting used to, servers expect 15-20%. Also, major sights get packed by late morning, go early or at dusk.
Rent cars off-airport to avoid huge surcharges, take the free shuttle to the lot. Saved over $50 on my last cross-country trip.
Food scene blew my mind, pizza in NYC and seafood on the coast. Distances are huge though, expect long drives or extra flights.
Smithsonian museums are free, but popular ones like Air and Space use timed passes. Book online the night before and aim for after lunch.
