About
Quick facts: Sarnath is the place where Buddha first gave a sermon after attaining enlightenment, known as the "Dharma Chakra Pravartana." The archaeological park here is full of ancient ruins and stupas that attract visitors from all over the world.
Highlights: One of the stupas here is called Dhamek Stupa, which is 43 meters tall and features very detailed stone carvings. A unique tradition here is dipping hands in a small river as a sign of respect before entering the sacred area.
Insider tips
- Wear modest and comfortable clothing to explore the historical site.
- Bring a camera to capture the carvings on Dhamek Stupa when the morning light is best.
- Avoid bringing too many belongings because security is tight at the entrance.
- Don't miss the small museum that displays original Buddhist artifacts found here.
