About
Quick facts: More than 145 thousand exhibits are preserved here, one of the most impressive being an authentic Soviet Il-2 attack aircraft recovered from a swamp. Each visit here is like a journey through four years of war, as the exposition is arranged in chronological order from 1941 to 1945.
Highlights: The most famous treasure of this museum is the surviving fragments of the Berlin Reichstag wall with inscriptions left by soldiers, including some in Lithuanian. You can touch them with your hand, which evokes a much stronger emotional feeling than any photograph.
Insider tips
- Your plan should be to view the exposition from top to bottom, as the top floors are dedicated to the partisan movement and are less visited.
- Photography without flash is allowed, so it is worth bringing a good camera, especially on the second floor with military vehicles.
- Military equipment is displayed outdoors, so if visiting during the warm season, it is worth setting aside time for the outdoor exposition as well.
- The audio guide is worth the investment; it provides more context than the descriptions below the displays.
