About
Quick facts: Over 25 historic buildings were moved here from across Funen Island and reconstructed piece by piece. More than 200 different heirloom plant varieties grow in the village gardens, varieties that had nearly disappeared from modern farming.
Highlights: A baker in period dress fires up the 19th century wood-burning oven each morning, filling the cobblestone streets with the smell of rye bread and cinnamon. Visitors can buy that still-warm bread straight from the bake house, torn open with their hands just as villagers would have done 150 years ago.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy shoes: the cobblestones and dirt paths get muddy after rain.
- Skip the cafeteria and instead buy fresh bread from the bakery building around 11 AM when it comes out of the oven.
- Visit on a weekday in June to avoid the summer crowds and see school field trips in action.
- The farm animals roam freely, so keep dogs on a short leash and watch your step near the goat pen.
