About

Quick facts: They are about 8 kilometers long and include 4 kilometers that are preserved in excellent condition. Every year, thousands of visitors climb up to the walls to enjoy the panoramic view of the city and the Thermaic Gulf.

Highlights: At the northeastern end of the walls, the Eptapyrgio (Yedi Kule) operated as a prison for over 100 years, until 1989. Its walls still bear carved names and messages from prisoners, creating a chilling contrast between fortress architecture and human history.

Insider tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes, because the path has steep inclines and slippery stones.
  • Go up to the section on Olympou Street for the best photo: the wall is framed by colorful houses.
  • Avoid midday hours in the summer, as there is no shade.
  • Combine the visit with a walk in the Upper Town, the picturesque alleys with traditional houses.
