About

Quick facts: Its facade is decorated with an impressive relief of the Lion of St. Mark, recalling the long Venetian rule over Koper. Inside, the main hall houses one of the oldest wooden ceilings in Slovenia, with intricately painted decorative motifs.

Highlights: Few know that in the basement of the building, sections of a Roman road and ancient foundations are preserved, visible through specially placed glass panels in the floor. Every year, at the end of May, the square in front of it fills with thousands of flowers during the floriculture festival, transforming the courtyard into a colorful garden.

Insider tips

  • Photograph the facade in the afternoon, when the light creates contrasts on the stone reliefs.
  • Do not miss the glass panel on the floor of the main hall that reveals the Roman foundations underneath.
  • Combine the visit with a walk in Tito Square and the nearby loggia.
  • Avoid the hours around midday, when groups from cruise ships arrive.
