Szybkie fakty: Roughly 300 years of history squeeze into one short lane where thin, pale Qing dynasty bricks sit flush against darker ones added during the Japanese era. The entire block came within a hair of demolition in the 1990s for a planned school expansion, but years of protests turned it into a free open air gallery instead.

Near the lane's far end a centuries old stone well still waits in the courtyard, and on quiet mornings the only sound is rain ticking off the tiled eaves.
