Szybkie fakty: More than 30 rock-cut churches and chapels cluster within this monastic complex carved into soft volcanic tuff. Several chapels retain vivid 11th-century Byzantine frescoes, with the Dark Church preserving its paintings through centuries of near-total darkness.

A single shaft of natural light hits the dome painting of Christ Pantocrator at just the right angle, making the golden halos seem to glow against the deep blue background.
