O atrakcjach
Szybkie fakty: Spread across 19 acres, these gardens showcase over 5,000 plant species from around the globe. Eight distinct glasshouses create different climate zones, from arid desert landscapes to tropical rainforest conditions.
Najważniejsze atrakcje: A narrow gauge railway once carried coal through tunnels beneath the gardens to heat those glasshouses, and you can still spot the sealed tunnel entrances if you know where to look. The curved, cast-iron bear pit from 1856 still stands behind the main pavilion, a surprisingly elegant structure built for a spectacle that no longer exists.
Wskazówki od insiderów
- Enter through the curved gates on Clarkehouse Road for the grandest first view of the formal gardens.
- The south-facing walled garden traps heat and blooms earlier in spring, a warm spot for a winter visit.
- Visit the bear pit in late afternoon when low sun casts dramatic shadows through its ironwork.
- Pack a picnic rather than buying cafe food; benches are scattered throughout the quieter side paths.
