Faro Coastal Trail

Rýchle fakty: Salt-laced air and the constant hush of tides meet a winding 10-kilometer trail that threads wooden boardwalks, mudflats and low dunes. Birdwatchers time early morning visits to spot over 40 species, including flocks of flamingos and curlew that gather in the shallow lagoons.

Zaujímavosti: Shallow lagoons flash like a huge silver sheet, and more than 50 pink flamingos often dot the surface creating surreal rippled reflections. A handful of local families still walk a 300-meter sandbank at dusk to harvest razor clams by eye and lantern, a practice that fills the air with the sharp scent of wet sand and frying garlic at nearby cafés.

• Wear sun-protective clothing and sturdy walking shoes, paths include boardwalks and sandy stretches.
• Bring binoculars and a pocket field guide for the many waders, flamingos, and herons in Ria Formosa.
• Start at sunrise or late afternoon for the best light and fewer people, the causeway viewpoints are especially photogenic.
• Carry water and a small towel if you plan to finish at Praia de Faro, and avoid driving there in high summer due to limited parking.
