About
Hitre informacije: Expect sweeping panoramas from rocky escarpments to manicured lawns, where jagged basalt outcrops meet Victorian planting and hidden cavities invite a closer look. Local birdlife puts on lively displays, and the stone house with its ornate glasswork feels like stepping into a stylish, weathered postcard.
Vrhunci: Climb the ridge known as 'Napoleon's Nose' to the summit at about 368 meters and feel a bracing Atlantic breeze, while a prehistoric earthwork called McArt's Fort crouches on the skyline like an ancient watchpost. Local lore ties Jonathan Swift to the silhouette, and inside a cool, echoing cave you can hear water drip and imagine the tales that fed Gulliver's imagination.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy walking shoes and a waterproof layer, paths can be muddy and exposed on the hill.
- Photograph from the castle terrace at golden hour for wide city and lough views, and from Napoleon's Nose for the classic hill profile.
- Avoid weekends between 11:00 and 15:00 to miss the largest crowds and cafe queues.
- Skip steep off-path routes into caves after heavy rain, the tracks become slippery and unstable.

4.0Weekend afternoon was busy but manageable, we paid a small parking fee. The guided cave walk had great history and was worth the modest extra.
Arrived at 9am, almost empty and sunny. The castle rooms and views were stunning, the cafe is a bit pricey but worth the treat.
Came late in the day and it was crowded, entry fee felt high for limited displays; the park trails were free and enjoyable though.
