Wicklow Mountains Hiking
Ziyaret için en iyi zaman
Late spring to early autumn (May through September) offers the driest trails, with May being prime for pink-purple heather blooming across the slopes. Early mornings give the clearest visibility before the afternoon mist rolls in over the ridges.
Bütçe ipuçları
The park itself is completely free to enter, with parking at most trailheads costing around 4-5 euros (or 8 euros at Glendalough's upper lot). Pack your own lunch and water since the few cafés near trailheads charge tourist prices, and check the park website for free guided walks during summer weekends.

Hakkında
Hızlı bilgiler: Roughly 500 square kilometers of blanket bog, heathland, and glacial valleys make up this vast national park, the largest of its kind in the country. Over 1.9 million people visit each year, with the Glendalough valley alone drawing the majority of foot traffic to its 6th-century monastic ruins.
Öne çıkanlar: At 925 meters, Lugnaquilla towers as the highest peak, yet most hikers never see its summit because the clouds roll in so fast that the view changes every twenty minutes. The Wicklow Way runs 131 kilometers along old drove roads and mass paths, where you can follow the same trail pilgrims used to carry grief and gratitude for centuries.
İçeriden ipuçları
- Bring three layers even in summer, the wind blows hard at elevation and temperatures drop several degrees on the ridges.
- The Spinc loop at Glendalough gives the most dramatic views for the effort, but start before 10am to dodge the tour bus crowds.
- Skip the crowded Green Road at Glendalough on weekends and head to the quieter Poulanass Waterfall trail for equally stunning scenery.
- Download an offline map before you go, phone signal vanishes in the deeper valleys and the bog paths can look identical when fog rolls in.
