Between the gates you'll find hundreds of stone fox statues wearing red bibs, some clutching tiny keys in their mouths, and locals quietly leave rice and sake at the smallest altars as a tradition believed to keep the mountain's good fortune flowing.

• Arrive before 08:30 to avoid large tour groups, or visit after 17:00 in summer when crowds thin.

• Head to the beach near Momijidani Park for the classic torii silhouette photo, and do not feed or chase the deer.
