Hakkında

Hızlı bilgiler: Around 9,000 years ago, this settlement on the Danube's banks housed fish-eaters who carved haunting trapezoidal-foreheaded stone sculptures. The site's exceptionally preserved architecture reveals houses with precise trapezoidal floor plans and lime-plastered hearths arranged in a near-mathematical pattern.

Öne çıkanlar: Look closely at the massive sandstone boulders carved with fish-like human faces: they are among Europe's oldest monumental sculptures, predating the pyramids by 4,000 years. Archaeologists found these stones still standing exactly where they were placed, oriented to face the river and the sun's path across the gorge.

İçeriden ipuçları

  • Wear sturdy shoes: the walkways between excavated houses are gravel and can be uneven near the river's edge.
  • The on-site museum displays the original 8,000-year-old sculptures, while casts remain outdoors, so don't skip the indoor gallery.
  • Bring binoculars to spot white-tailed eagles and cormorants fishing along the Danube from the site's elevated terrace.
  • Go on a weekday morning if possible: weekends draw bus tours from Belgrade, filling the wooden walkways by noon.
