Ziyaret için en iyi zaman

Weekday mornings offer soft light and quieter paths for reading the murals without crowds. April brings the big annual festival day with Aztec dancing, lowriders, and food stalls if you want the full celebration.

Bütçe ipuçları

Entry costs nothing, and the murals stay open to the street around the clock. Bring cash for the food trucks and artist booths that set up on festival days.

Hakkında

Hızlı bilgiler: More than 100 murals climb the massive concrete pillars that hold up a freeway bridge across nearly 8 acres of public greenspace. Neighborhood residents and artists forced the city to halt construction here back in 1970, and the rescued concrete has been painted with stories ever since.

Öne çıkanlar: Salvador Torres and hundreds of neighbors camped beneath the bridge for 12 days armed with shovels and pickaxes to stop a police substation from going up. Their standoff worked, and the rescued pillars now carry Victor Ochoa's Quetzalcoatl serpent whose painted coils wrap an entire column.

İçeriden ipuçları

  • Wear sunblock and carry water, since the exposed concrete plaza offers almost no shade on hot afternoons.
  • Shoot the Quetzalcoatl pillar from the northeast corner just before sunset, when warm light rakes across the paint.
  • Skip midday in summer, when overhead sun washes out the mural colors and heat radiates off the pavement.
  • Follow the painted stairways down toward the waterfront after exploring to see the same pillars from a fresh angle.
