About
Quick facts: Every year, more than 50,000 visitors come here to witness firsthand the distillation process of the oldest still-operating rum distillery in Jamaica. You can smell the distinctive oak and molasses aromas as soon as you step into the distillery area, which has been in operation for more than 270 years.
Highlights: The rums here are fermented using natural wild yeast that has been passed down through generations for more than two centuries, not commercial yeast. As a result, every sip has a flavor profile that cannot be found anywhere else in the Caribbean.
Insider tips
- Ask for an extra glass during the tasting session so you can compare the flavors of aged and young rum side by side.
- The best photo spot is in the area of giant oak barrels that are more than 50 years old; the afternoon light here is very dramatic.
- Do not miss the duty-free shop at the end of the tour; rum prices here are 30% cheaper compared to airport stores.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants; the distillery floor can be slippery due to molasses spills.
