Best in the morning around 9:00, when the sun shines directly on the gate facade and creates perfect light for photographs. You will also avoid the crowds of tourists who pour in here in the afternoon.
Budget tips
Viewing the gate from the outside is free. If you want to see the interior and the exhibition about the history of the fortifications, admission costs 10 lei for adults; we recommend a combined ticket with the nearby Black Church for 25 lei.

About
Quick facts: Schei Gate was originally part of Brasov's medieval fortifications and served as the only entrance to the city from the south. It has retained its original Baroque appearance from 1827, although its foundations date back to the 15th century.
Highlights: At the top of the gate, notice the stone coat of arms with the inscription "Salva Guarda." This was a privileged entrance through which only Transylvanian Saxons could pass without customs duty. When merchants passed through with carts loaded with salt, they had to pay a toll measured by the width of the wheels.
Insider tips
- Stop at the information board on the left side of the gate. The original drawbridge system, which no longer exists, is drawn on it.
- Photograph the gate from the lower part of the street, and you will capture the entire arch together with the surrounding houses without any distracting elements.
- Notice the small stone balls walled into the sides of the gate; they served as protection against cannonballs.
- Avoid visiting at noon, when cars drive through here and you are not able to photograph the gate in peace.
