Quick facts: The city's old defensive bastion site now holds a vast white stone plaza that seems to tilt toward the sea. Underneath the plaza, an open-air auditorium hosts concerts where the bass literally travels up through the slatted walkway under your feet.
Highlights: Stand at the seaward railing and the floor's gentle downhill tilt, lined up with the receding white rooftops, makes the entire town appear to slide toward the horizon, a trick that has photographers crouching low all day. The same plaza is really a roof over a sunken concert hall, so during summer festivals you watch the sunset while feeling the drums rumble through your shoes.

- Wear flat, grippy shoes because the plaza's slope is noticeably steeper than it looks from the entrance.
- Crouch low at the seaward railing around sunset to see the optical illusion sharpen to its full effect.
