Mittlere Brücke
Best time to visit
Late afternoon on a clear day, when the low sun gilds the cathedral stone and the river glows green below. Sunrise is almost empty if you want the whole span to yourself.
Budget tips
The crossing itself is free at all hours, and the tiny cable ferries that zigzag across just downstream cost a couple of francs in coins. Have small change ready, since ferry operators take cash only, and pair the walk with the free riverside promenade.

About
Quick facts: Roughly 192 meters of ironwork march across the Rhine here, and that tiny red chapel in the middle has watched over the crossing for centuries. People have paid to cross this spot since 1225, when the medieval toll bridge replaced a risky ferry, yet today the span is free for everyone on foot.
Highlights: That small chapel mid-span is leftover from a brutal medieval test: the accused were tossed into the Rhine from the rail, and anyone who clawed back to the surface was declared innocent by divine judgment. The water still runs fast and cold enough for that ritual to make sense, especially on spring melt days when the current yanks hard at the piers.
Insider tips
- For a clean shot, stand on the east-bank railing beside the chapel and aim toward the cathedral as the sun drops.
- Arrive before 9 a.m. on weekends, when trams and tour groups are sparse and the deck feels like it's yours alone.
- Take one of the coin-operated cable ferries from the bank below for an unusual look up at the span from the water.
- Come back after dark, when the crossing is floodlit and its reflections shimmer on the current, a totally different mood from rush hour.
