Mount Etna
Best time to visit
Early morning or late afternoon in spring and autumn for cooler temperatures and clearer visibility. Winter offers dramatic snow scenes but expect reduced access and road closures.
Budget tips
Trail access around the lower slopes and the Silvestri craters is free, while the cable car and 4x4 minibuses to higher elevations require paid tickets; compare single-ticket and combined cable+minibus options for best value. Bring cash for small parking fees and consider joining a shared group tour to split guide costs.

About
Brze činjenice: A constantly shifting skyline comes from frequent eruptions, with observers recording activity for centuries. Black volcanic soils feed terraces of Nerello Mascalese vineyards and citrus orchards, giving wines and fruit an unmistakable mineral edge.
Istaknuto: Ascending by cable car to roughly 2,500 meters reveals steaming fumaroles and glowing lava that paint the night sky in orange with a sharp sulfur tang. Local guides sometimes lead small groups to watch lava fountains soar hundreds of meters while walkers crunch on glassy black pumice and winemakers harvest grapes from vines rooted in cracked lava.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy hiking boots and layered clothing, temperatures drop and wind rise quickly with elevation.
- Bring sun protection and a windproof jacket, snow can appear above 2,500 m even in spring.
- Start at the cable car opening or hike the lower Silvestri craters first to avoid mid-day coach crowds.
- Avoid attempting summit routes alone when access is restricted, book a certified guide for safety and up-to-date volcanic conditions.

4.0Visited late afternoon, few crowds but wind closed upper trails. Skipped the jeep to save 30 euro but left a bit disappointed.
Arrived at 7:30am and had almost no line. Cable car plus jeep was 60 euro and the summit view was absolutely worth it.
Came at 1pm and it was packed; single ticket 45 euro. The guided lava walk was great for facts but the cable car line felt overpriced.
