Om
Hurtige fakta: The monumental rotunda soars 21.5 meters high, covering what Christians believe is the site of Jesus's crucifixion and burial. Control over the church is shared among six Christian denominations, whose monks once settled disputes by leaving the key with a Muslim family, a tradition that continues today.
Højdepunkter: Just inside the entrance, the Stone of Anointing draws pilgrims who kneel to touch and kiss its reddish limestone surface, smoothed by centuries of devotion. Above the Edicule, a small hole in the dome lets a shaft of sunlight beam directly onto the tomb at certain times of day, creating an almost theatrical glow.
Insidertips
- Wear a mask during the Greek Orthodox service at 8 AM on Sundays, as the incense smoke can be overwhelming inside the small Edicule.
- Head upstairs to the Golgotha chapel in the morning when light streams in and crowds are thin, giving you a clear view of the rock of Calvary under glass.
- Look for the small blue ladder propped above the main entrance, a 19th-century Ottoman decree that no denomination may move or alter it without consensus.
- Skip the long queue for the Edicule by visiting during the 4 AM Franciscan procession, when priests open the tomb to worshippers directly.
