Visitors often linger before a revered icon of the Virgin, while reused Pharaonic columns and Coptic fresco fragments give the interior a layered, almost archaeological feel.
Tipphetked: Climb a narrow, worn staircase and you pop into a wooden basilica perched above an ancient fortress gate, the nave literally suspended so shafts of sunlight slash across gilded icons and centuries-old woodwork.
