Visit early in the morning (8:00-10:00) when the light gently filters through the windows of the royal palace and the halls are almost deserted. In January and February the climate is drier and more pleasant.

Nopeat faktat: Ospitato all'interno dell'antico palazzo reale, il museo raccoglie oltre 800 reperti provenienti dalla città sacra di Polonnaruwa. Le sue sale custodiscono statue di Buddha in pietra calcarea e una delle più complete collezioni di monete medievali singalesi dello Sri Lanka.
Kohokohdat: Pochi sanno che qui si trova una delle più suggestive statue in bronzo del dio Shiva danzante, ritrovata intatta tra le rovine di un tempio induista. - Do not miss the small courtyard at the back of the museum, where tombstones and stelae are displayed outdoors, little visited by tourists.
- Bring a notebook to transcribe the inscriptions in ancient Sinhalese: some tell incredible stories of kings and battles.
- At the end of the visit, go up to the palace terrace: the view over the ruins of the royal city is breathtaking and almost no one goes up there.
